A Tribute to Olympians: From the Paralympics to Lake Placid, with Free Materials Thrown In for Good Measure…

So I just got back from vacation, and one of our destinations was Lake Placid, NY.  If you’re not familiar with this particular section of the Adirondack Mountains in upstate NY, you really should be – it’s a gorgeous place, full of mirror lakes and pine forests and lots of cool stuff to do – including the Olympics Museum and sites of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics.

The Husband and The Step-Son are both hockey players.  Checking out the site of the Miracle on Ice (for those non-hockey fans, the moment when the U.S. beat the U.S.S.R. at the 1980 Olympics) was amazing and inspiring and truly cool.  We happened to be in Lake Placid as the Junior Grand Prix figure skating competition was going on, and even got to watch pairs skating a bit.  So I had a lot of Olympics on my mind…

When I saw in my inbox that the Amazing People Club had a series of materials available on the Olympics AND that the Paralympics were still going on, well, I realized I could share some Olympics excitement with you!  So I invite you to check out the following free materials:

  • A podcast about the various 2012 Olympics materials they have available
  • A video about William Penny Brookes,  the founder of the UK Olympics from Much Wenlock; ‘Wenlock’ was the official mascot this year
  • AND if you sign up to join the Club (it’s completely free and they don’t send  you spam/tons of email, promise), you can also download a free audio book about Brookes (AND one on Mark Twain, which I will mention even though he’s not Olympics-adjacent, because he is one of my favorite authors of all time).

So investigate some/all of this stuff – there are a ton of incredible stories around the Olympics/Paralympics, from athletes’ tales of perseverance and sacrifice, to nations’ stories of struggle and heartbreak, to towns’ tales of surviving the hosting of these vast events.  Very inspiring stuff, and thanks again to Marion and the kind folks at the Amazing People Club for sharing some of it with us!

    Hi Jill!

Can you believe that I’ve never been to Lake Placid? I know… right in my back yard and all. 🙂

I love figure skating though. Years ago I saw Oksana Baiul, Viktor Petrenko, Katarina Witt, etc. in a show in Buffalo. I loved it.

I’m glad you had a good trip! Welcome back to the craziness! 🙂

  • Yeah, the figure skating stuff was crazy cool – these tiny little kids with HUGE muscled legs, flying through the air… Wild!

It is indeed crazy – we’ll catch up soon, maybe tomorrow?

And get yourself to Lake Placid already!! You are LONG overdue for a vacation, my friend… 😉
