Hooray for me AGAIN I said!

So as I’ve mentioned, I recently got married – hooray for me! – and now, finally, at last, comes the day I’ve been waiting for almost as much as the wedding day: the day we leave for our honeymoon!!

WOOHOO INDEED, she proclaimed!

We are going to Aruba. The Husband (teehee – it makes me giggle like crazy to write that, still!) has never been there. I used to go there by myself for a week every year when I was working at the pharmaceutical company. I had first been there a number of years before, courtesy of The Best Friend (who was a travel agent at the time and got us an amazing deal), and I loved it. When I was working at The Company That Must Not Be Named, I was so miserable that I needed a place to recuperate and relax, and remembering Aruba fondly, I chose that one year as my destination. I had such an amazing time and it was so exactly perfectly wondrously what I needed that I went back year after year.

I took a lot of grief for this.

Some was of the “why do you want to go to the SAME PLACE all the time” variety, some of the “there are WAY more beautiful beaches/destinations/countries than ARUBA” type. Some was of the “how boring to go away BY YOURSELF” stripe, and some of the “isn’t it dangerous to travel ALONE there” ilk.

To each and every critic I said the same thing: BAH. Followed swiftly by some or all of the following sentences:

Aruba is lovely. The people are wonderful. My resort is great. It has a private island – hello… I am safe as long as I don’t act stupidly. I am not by myself – there are always people around if I want to chat (primarily European tourists who are polite and willing to engage in chatter but not to hang around for too long, which is lovely). And even when I’m not talking to people, I’m reading, so I’m still not by myself – not really. It’s gorgeous and quiet and relaxing and I don’t have to change money or worry about a foreign language, so it’s also easy.

When The Husband (then The Fiancee) and I were trying to decide where to go on our honeymoon, I initially didn’t suggest Aruba. I had always gone there in a certain way for a certain reason – namely, by myself with a large bag of books (I would take two per day plus a spare – yes, 15 books for a week) to read and relax. That’s not exactly how I envisioned my honeymoon going… 😉 Plus I knew he wasn’t the world’s biggest beach fan or someone who could just sit around and lounge about.

Yet he is actually the one who suggested we go there. He said (and I’m paraphrasing) that it was a place that was important to me and that I had talked a lot about and that as a result he wanted to see it. So that’s where we are headed. Hooray for me doubly, I say, because (a) I have the sweetest husband and (b) I get to go back to Aruba!

So we are off today. I still have a bag of books, but not two per day. I still plan to read some of them and to lounge about and relax. But now I get to do it with him. Hooray even more!! 😉

Oh, and if you want to read my previous thoughts on Aruba, check this out – from way back in my early blog days!

  • Aww…thats so sweet! Have a blast at Aruba..that place becomes all the more special to you now! Congratulations on your wedding too! Sorry never got around saying this aloud. Always did it in my mind! lol!

    • Thanks Shilpa – it was amazing and definitely is even more special now… And we’re already talking about which anniversary will take us back there! 😉 And thank you so much for the congrats – I do a lot of the “talking to other people in my own head” thing, so no worries!!

  • Don’t mess with what works – if you find a perfect vacation place that helps you to relax, then you should go back as often as possible. I think it’s greta that you get to share your favorite destination with your new husband.

P.S. Drink some tequila for me, please.

To you, my daughter, and my wonderful (new) son-in-law–now you will have even better memories of Aruba–a place you have always enjoyed!!

  • Congratulations again. And I hope you have a great time. (and it will be fun to say or write “husband” for months. Five years later and it’s still fun to say “the wife” 🙂 )

    • Teehee – Paul, it is amazing to me how fun it is to say! Thanks again, and we did have an incredible time… I started “The Imaginings” – I’m extraordinarily creeped out so far, and am only a handful of chapters in, so hooray for many more chills ahead!
