Guest Post: A Few Poems About Family

I thought we would end the week with a Guest Post featuring a selection of poems provided by Steve Roberts. Today’s poetry topic: family. The selections are a combination of bittersweet and fantastically funny. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

About Pee

Every family has a tale about pee
Here’s one that happened to me
If you can top this with tales of your own
Send them along to, www.peeinmyear.com

Dads don’t take pit stops for the family
Despite desperate requests aplenty
If I don’t have to go and we got gas
Wait a couple more miles, the need will pass.

On a freeway one of our boys started to complain
Mom held a Coke bottle to relieve the pain
Standing on the transmission hump in the back seat
Wee Willy into the bottle, speedy, nice and neat.

Dad hit a bump going around a curve
Out came Willy as the car did a swerve
Stream diverted the kids all cheer
“How am I supposed to drive, he’s peeing in my ear.”

The moral of the story is simply this
Not everyone can wait as long as Dad to piss
But as Dad gets older, the kids drive of late
Dad cries from the back seat, “Hey I can’t wait.”

Very Short Poems
From the book Rhythm and Rhyme Lifetime, Hometown Poetry and Song, by Steven R. Roberts

What Are Brothers For

Girls have girlfriends. Boys have brothers.
They’re a team, a common theme, like no other
Some save their brothers’ lives, mine saved mine
It happens, it happens all the time

Mom

Losing your mom takes a piece of your heart
A part of who you are and where you’re from
Gone is something you held dear from the start
Lost forever the phrase: “Hey, look at me, Mom.”

The “wee” poem is cute–I never had boys so it was not always that easy–right Jill?? However, the older you get and the more familiar places you visit, you get to know how to find the restrooms real quick!!!
