This was good but weird, like all Lutz’s work. She has a fabulous knack for writing quirky-strange offbeat characters that are endearing and irritating in equal measure, yet never fail to fully engage me or hook themselves into my imagination. Things got a little strange, even for one of her novels, near the end and I had to shake my head a number of times, but on the whole I do think it all worked.
Her writing style is very easy to fall into and her characterizations are top-rate. I found the concept behind this one original and intriguing, and the way things unfolded left me wondering for a while if this was going to be black comedy, madcap adventure, or a more straightforward thriller. In the end it has elements of all three, and I think that is why I liked it so much.
It was a wild and fun ride with some surprising heartfelt moments, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Chalk up another win for Lisa Lutz!
