Today’s Quote of the Day, Courtesy of Uncertain Voyage by Dorothy Gilman

So I think I’m going to make this a regular feature, since I’ve been finding so many memorable quotes in the books I’m reading lately… They’re not always (or, so far, even often) reflective of where I am or what’s going on, mind you, they just happen to be snippets that are (for whatever reason) resonant with me. Today’s is courtesy of the immensely enjoyable Dorothy Gilman and hails from Uncertain Voyage.

She had flatly made up her mind to expect nothing from him, and now he was offering her something, which bewildered her; for if he genuinely cared, why did he not offer her more, and if he did not care, why did he offer her anything?

If that intrigues you, or if you’ve ever thought you might like a cozy spy book (yes, that is actually what I meant to type), you have GOT to try the Mrs. Pollifax books. They’re her best known and absolutely deliciously fun. Ms. Gilman writes delightful books full of absolutely gem-like characters (not only the redoubtable Mrs. P but also the eponymous Clairvoyant Countess being among my most favorite) and is another great one for serving up a heaping portion of life lesson with her tales of surprisingly strong (often to themselves, most of all) women that society tends to frown upon. The majority of her books were written in the 1970s – 1990s, and there’s a deceptive simplicity to the stories that most usually masks some serious personality analysis. She’s one of my favorites, and while this current book – Uncertain Voyage – is not actually one of the best I’ve read, it’s still noteworthy… Happy reading!
