Book Review: The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth

About the Book

There’s a cottage on a cliff. Gabe and Pippa’s dream home in a sleepy coastal town. But their perfect house hides something sinister. The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Night after night Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them off the ledge. Until he doesn’t.

When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the questions spiral…Did the victim jump? Was she pushed?

And would Gabe, the love of Pippa’s life, her soulmate…lie? As the perfect facade of their marriage begins to crack, the deepest and darkest secrets begin to unravel.

My Review

This was my first Sally Hepworth, but it defintely won’t be my last. I really enjoyed her writing style, finding it to mesh with her storytelling style perfectly. The pacing was well managed. When the tension ramped up, so did the writing – it made for a very organic read that was easy to fall into.

I found some of the multi-layered
revelations to feel a bit obvious and the characters’ refusal to see them to be odd, but in a domestic thriller the first order of business is to be prepared to suspend disbelief, so that didn’t bother me. I found the plot to be a nice blend of conventional topics (infidelity, parenting) and unusual (suicide, woman as breadwinner), which made the read very enjoyable and fresh feeling. I read this one very quickly.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my obligation-free review copy.
