Audio Book Review: Relatively Normal Secrets by C.W. Allen

Every now and again I really like a middle grade book for variety. In my opinion, this category of fiction requires a different type of storytelling talent because the books can’t rely on the “when all else fails throw in sex and violence” tropes of “adult” writing. The stories need to move at a tighter clip, to address younger attention spans, and the result is usually a fun quick read (or listen!) that makes for a great break from the thrillers and heavier-themed lit fic I tend toward most of the time.

This was a perfect example of that and a very fun audiobook. The narration was excellent and perfectly suited to the story. I found the characters delightful and really enjoyed the unusual world-building and the forms that the world-within-a-world story took. There was not quite as much plot or character development as I would have liked to see – although I do think it was appropriate for the grade level, there could easily have been a little more depth and breadth without losing the audience.

It felt like the setup to a series, and if there were subsequent book set in this world I would definitely take a look – as well as introduce my eight-year-old to them! She would love and relate to Tuesday’s sense of adventure as much as I did Zed’s more careful methodical nature!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my obligation-free review copy.

P.S. How fabulous is that cover??
