Book Review: Every Waking Hour by Joanna Schaffhausen

Oh my goodness but this is the most fantastic series! I’ve reviewed the earlier series titles on here (The Vanishing Season, No Mercy, and All the Best Lies), if you’re curious. I wouldn’t recommend jumping into this series mid-stream – start at the beginning, you won’t be sorry. It’s character-driven, and you’ll miss out on a lot if you don’t…

Ellery Hathaway is a marvelous character – she’s broken and bent and watching her put herself back together again as she struggles to develop as a person despite what happened to her when she was so young is absolutely fascinating and horrifying in equal measure. Add in the complexities of Reed Markham, the challenges family represents to both of them, and the difficulties they encounter in their work rescuing children, and the mix is an absolutely brilliant series.

The characterizations are incredible here – complex, complicated, and fully the dimensional, displaying human frailty from so many angles… The writing is wonderful – the style, the pacing, the plot are all delivered with a pinpoint precision that makes the books a joy to read even when the material is dark and horrifying.

I cannot believe how this one ends – here’s hoping Schaffhausen has the next one almost written because I simply cannot wait more than a year to see how it’s all going to play out!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my obligation-free review copy.
