Book Review: Resurrection Men by David Craig

I’ve commented before on how some excellent books just don’t seem to lend themselves well to reviews – at least not lengthy ones. I have credited it to the strength of the plot (as odd as that may sound) and to the originality of the story. If things are well-crafted and full of the right kind of surprises, it’s hard to describe them in any great detail without giving things away. Such stories don’t deserve to have one iota of their enjoyment marred (or possibly marred) by an overzealous – and overly revelatory – review. As a result, one can speak to tone and writing, to characterization and pacing or theme, but it’s tough to be very explicit or descriptive without running the risk of saying too much.

This was such a book for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, and cannot wait for the next in the series. But my actual review isn’t going to be that long, because I don’t want to say too much. So trust me when I say that this is brief, but you should NOT misunderstand that to mean I don’t have a lot to say. Rather, the opposite – I just can’t say it if you haven’t read it. With that caveat firmly established, let’s move on to the *actual* review, shall we?

We’ll start with the obvious: What a great find this was! (You probably gathered I’d say that, or something to its effect, but it had to be said nevertheless.) I learned about this book through the delightful folks at Elsewhen Press and am so glad that I did… It was an original take on a set of supernatural topics that have been well-covered, and that’s no small feat. The writing is gorgeous – gothic and tonal and perfectly suited to the tale. Hunt and Foley are a grand team, the perfect Mulder-Scully mix of skepticism and belief and a great foil for each other and the mysteries they keep finding themselves enmeshed in. The Sooty Feathers are a delicious evil and I can’t wait to see where the story takes them next.

Thanks to Elsewhen Press and the author for my review copy.
