Guest Book Reviews: Fly Like an Eagle and Entangled by S.B.K. Burns

More from Sharon for you today! This time, it’s a two-fer – two books in the Ages of Invention series. Enjoy!

Entangled
In Entangled, Burns takes us to Dawn Johnson, a Hume’n – or member of the lower class – who teaches a course on past life regression. Can she stifle her forbidden love for a Cartesian (higher class) while figuring out how to save the scientists of the eighteenth century AND fixing her own life in the process? Or will their love win out at the cost of the scientists?

We have a winner! Entangled by S.B.K Burns is time travel done right. There is a wonderful weave of suspense throughout, blending the 21st century and the 1700’s, with a meld of future and past, families and lovers all truly “entangled”… This book kept me riveted. In the beginning I found myself turning back pages to make sure I was following the story line. Once I grasped all the players I was hooked, and couldn’t wait to move on to the second book!

Fly Like an Eagle
In Fly Like an Eagle, the second book in the series, tomboy Sam wishes to escape the marital clutches of her warmongering father’s business partner. His son, half Native American, might be where she finds her escape – and the key to stopping their fathers’ machinations of war. In an intricate dance between a search for truth, exploration of a spiritual world, and stopping war, will the cost be Benjamin Franklin’s scientific advancements?

This was meant to be a sequel, I think. Once again it was time travel with a twist, but honestly, even knowing it was the second book in the series, I did not really connect this book the previous until the middle of the novel. The spin on this one was extraordinary in that it combined science and mathematics with Native Spirituals (Flow of Life) and with time travel. I find it fascinating that time travel always seems to involve “what if ” changes in linear life, and enjoyed the way that played out here. I also really enjoyed the drama of parents and lovers in this installment. I did not feel like the theme was followed throughout the book though, and felt like I was left dangling in the end. Although I would not rate this one as highly as the first book, I am looking forward to the next installment as I have really enjoyed the series and writing style overall.

Thank you to the author and publicists (the incomparable Author Marketing Experts, Inc.) for providing these books and the opportunity to review them!
