Book Review: The Oversight by Charlie Fletcher

I think Charlie Fletcher is vastly underrated… This is a fantastic book – I’ve read the second in the trilogy and it’s equally good; I am rereading currently because I finally got my hands on the third and cannot WAIT to see how things play out.

There is so much going on in this story – it’s full of fantastic characters, a cool take on the world-within-the-world theme, more secrets than one novel should be able to hold, and enough magic and bizarreness to keep fans of Neil Gaiman or Ben Aaronovitch happy (and those aren’t names I throw about lightly). Fundamentally, it’s a story about the eponymous group responsible for keeping the “natural” world safe from the supranatural one. But it’s so much more than that – it’s also a tale of redemption, fear, hope, possibility, and becoming more than one is believed possible (both by the self and by others). It’s all wrapped up and presented in a marvelously engaging and totally immersive writing style that never fails to pull me in. And it’s set in London – best city EVER for supra- (or super-) natural books because of its marvelous blend of history and fantastic secrets…

I’m WAY behind on my list of obligated To Be Reviewed books, but have been feeling overwhelmed by those lately (despite the fact that many/most are quite good). Combine that with the obligations of the holidays, and I’ve been feeling a little, well, winter blah lately… I knew I needed a pick-me up to get back on track, so despite my utter and complete lack of time to start anything new (let alone a trilogy) I cracked this one open yesterday. Suffice to say I haven’t regretted it – or my failure to do anything productive since I started – since! Trust me when I say this is just what you need, if you’re looking for an escape (with a dark underbelly) from the everyday…
