Guest Post: Stor(ies), an Original Poem by Dane Cobain

Today I’m thrilled to bring you an original poem by the omni-talented Dane Cobain. If you missed his post earlier this week, be sure to read it – it will introduce you to this talented and original voice in fiction, non-fiction, and (of course) poetry. Today’s poem is a special treat. Dane wrote it for Jill-Elizabeth.com, and it is composed from a list of five (semi)random words I submitted. I think it’s marvelous and hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Stor(ies)
by Dane Cobain

A story lies
in the readers’ eyes
like a line you like
when no one else does.

People forget
our brains are wired
to like liars,
the kind that write
by night
with the lights out.

People forget
they have no choice;
it’s something to do
with dopamine,
and neural networks
with electric chemicals,
and our history
is written
in history books.

Meanwhile,
brilliant young men
meet brilliant young women
in brilliang young pubs,
clubs and restaurants,
talkin’ Tolkien
in the back of
The Bird and Baby.

It’s literary
serendipity,
plenty more fish in the sea
just like the words you read,
and now so many books
are released every day
that no one
could ever
read them all.

It’s a tragedy
but on a smaller scale;
a bit like a child
dropping ice cream.

Thank you again Dane – we hope to see more from you in the future!
