Holidays are Here, HOORAY! (Part 2 of 2)

So last week, I offered up my own suggestions for holiday book shopping, and promised that I would also provide suggestions for book-related gifts.  As I mentioned, special thanks go to Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl – you will notice a couple of my ideas below are also present on her site, and many kudos go out to her for pointing me in such great gift-giving directions!

Without further ado, I offer my own holiday gift-giving guide for the readers you know…

Book-Related/Book-Adjacent Gifts for Kids and Adults

First up: Kids

  • Bookplates (these turtle-in-ocean or hanging monkey ones are great – if a bit pricey – examples) – I love bookplates (I have raved about them before), and what a great way to get kids interested in taking care of their own books.  There are many options available on amazon…
  • Camouflage bookmark/timer with reading light – Everyone can use a booklight and a bookmark, and these are cute enough to appeal to kids (they even come in multiple colors and with a timer gadget!) AND small enough to be smuggled under covers for after-bedtime reading.  What more could a kid ask for?
  • I Read Banned Books Bracelet (Teen Titles) – I learned about these courtesy of a flyer at my favorite local indie bookstore, Present Tense.  The adult bracelet is on my holiday wish list, and they also make a teen version, so it makes its way to both lists!
  • IlluStory Make Your Own Story Kit – How fun!  I wish I’d had one of these…  I loved writing stories, as do many kids.  And how cool to be able to turn your story into a “real” book!  It’s a great way to encourage creativity – and who knows, your kid might be the next big thing!
  • Spooky Tales Game – This one was brought to my attention by Step-son.  Along the lines of the make-your-own-book thing, this is a clever game that requires kids to make up the scariest story possible – using the elements they pick from a deck of characters/settings/situations and a creepy-noises microphone.  Fun!

Next: Adults

  • “I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie” bag – Teehee.  What a FABULOUS gift – how often do readers get to proclaim their love for books AND cheesy ‘90s rap courtesy of Sir Mix-a-Lot?  Not near often enough, I say…  Which is definitely part of the appeal here.  Plus, it’s also true – at least for me!  (teehee again)
  • I Read Banned Books Bracelet – I learned about these courtesy of a flyer at my favorite local indie bookstore, Present Tense.  The adult bracelet is on my holiday wish list, and they also make a teen version, so it makes its way to both lists!
  • GE Book Light – This is my newest favorite book light.  It is LED, so very bright, light-weight so it won’t hurt your books, and nicely adjustable.  Plus it’s inexpensive.  Hooray!
  • The Thinker Bookends – I love bookends.  I don’t always get to use them – I have a lot of built-in bookshelves and free-standing sets of shelves, and have enough books that I can’t spare shelf space for bookends.  But precisely because I have so many books, I also occasionally have to put them on tabletops or wall shelves without ends – including on the shelves above my writing desk in the study.  And there, well, there I get to use bookends!
  • Book-Themed Furniture – Okay, these are mostly big and/or inexpensive and therefore unlikely to be practical gifts, but how freaking cool would it be to have a book couch or book gym mats or book planter?

  • Tracy Brown

I love the idea of bookplates as a gift! (Why haven’t I ever thought of that?)

    • I agree Tracy, what a great idea right? I only thought of it because we are in the process of moving and The Husband asked why only some of my books had them, and I had to point out that I don’t have enough to put one in each book – hence the aha-moment of gifts!!
