Getting Started…

So a blog…  Lynn has been after me to write one for a while now, and the combined weight of her suggestions and Rick’s assistance in setting up the website has finally gotten my lazy ass into gear (at least first gear).  I have this theory, see, that everyone has a story inside of them – at least one, that is; some people have many more – but I believe everyone has at least one.  And sometimes that one needs to be told.  This is how I have increasingly felt over the past year or so.  And so the whole sabbatical from work, grand taking-time-off plan was born as a way to actualize this feeling. Yet somehow, here I am a year-plus later, and still have only a notebook of ideas/lines/titles and some very short starts at a story/two.  Ugh. Not very impressive for a year-plus, eh?   I don’t know if anyone else will ever actually read this – not sure if my ramblings are really entertaining to anyone but me (and even that sometimes is stretching it – I am not always interesting even to myself, sadly enough) – but here’s hoping that this blog will start me writing at least short things very regularly in the hope that this will trigger me to write longer things at least semi-regularly.

Where to begin then – isn’t that always the question?  Often when writing papers or work memos or briefs, I would leave the beginning until, well, the end, because it’s hard to figure out how to start when you believe, as I do, in the importance of first sentences.  That’s how I pick books to buy/read, as many people know – I read the first sentence.  If I like it, I read the first page and usually buy the book.  If I don’t, well, you get put back on the shelf/table and I walk on.  So no pressure about beginnings, right?  Ugh.  I guess I have to start somewhere though, and since I don’t think a blog is a place to spend hours and hours wordsmithing, as opposed to getting thoughts/ideas out into the e-world, this beginning (inauspicious and unclever as it is) will have to stand for now.  I promise that any actual writings will have MUCH better beginnings – as, hopefully, will some blog entries – so stick around world (or Jill the Reader, if I/she turn/turns out to be the only one, teehee)
